Research Spotlight The Cryogenic Thermal Fluids Lab
Director Dr. Jacob N. Chung, and Manager Remiel Hong Hu Research Objective: “Understand the fundamental physics of heat transfer in cryogenic transport line and during line chilldown.” Cryogenic fluids are crucial in space exploration Necessitated in power and propulsion Chilldown – the initial stage for cryogenic fluids in thermal management Model the chilldown process by simulating various gravity levels in a vertical tube four distinct flow regions are incorporated in the model: single-phase vapor flow, dispersed flow, inverted annu-lar flow, and single-phase liquid flow Numerical modeling of cryogenic chilldown process in terrestrial gravity and microgravity Kun Yuan, Yan Ji, J.N. Saturn Probe, Cassini, Enters Final Hours
final data transmissions early Friday morning (Sept. 15). Heat and friction created by the fall will cause Cassini to break apart, and its components to vaporize, only 2 or 3 minutes after it enters Saturn's atmosphere. The $3.2 billion Cassini-Huygens mission — a joint effort between NASA and the European Space Agency — launched toward Saturn in October 1997 and arrived in July 2004. Cassini probed the weird world of Titan and flew through geysers erupting from the surface of the moon Enceladus Saturn Probe, Cassini, Enters Final Hours
