Learning Objective Agenda:
Today I will be able to empathize with victims of the Holocaust in WWII by examining diverse sources. Agenda: Lecture Notes: Ch Holocaust Camp Liberation Exit Slip Quiz
6
Lecture Notes: Ch. 16.3 Holocaust
Aryan Race Aryan race considered the “master race” by Hitler & Nazi. Ex. Blond hair, blue eyes, able bodied, etc.
7
Holocaust Racist views led to the systematic genocide of Jews and other groups judged as inferior to the Nazi.
8
Hitler’s Racist Ideas For many generations the Germans disliked & envied Jewish people through European history. Hitler reflected such racist ideas. Germans blamed Jews for their country’s defeat in WWI & all their economic problems.
9
Kristallnacht, Nov. 9, 1938 Night of the Broken Glass: Jewish neighborhoods & businesses destroyed. Marked the beginning of what is to come for the Jewish people.
10
Nuremberg Laws, 1935 Deny Jews many basic rights
Denied citizenship, marriages between Jews & non-Jews (Law of the “The Protection of German Blood & Honour”), education denied, & denied voting rights. Private property taken away: Jews evicted from their homes, curfews established, & radios/telephones/jewelry/pets taken away. Forced to wear the Star of David
11
Anti-Semitic Propaganda
Propaganda used promote the idea that Aryan race is “superior” over others. Nazi’s claimed scientific evidence to “proof” non-Aryans were less than human.
12
“Herkunft Und Rassen-Geschichte Der Germanen” (Ancestry & Racial History of the German People) By Professor Dr. Hans FK Gunther, 1935 Example of a racist book that was used as scientific evidence that non-Aryans were less than humans.
13
Ghettos Anti-Semitic laws & mistreatment of Jews led many to flee to France, Britain, & U.S. But, overwhelming numbers immigrating led such countries to close their doors. Hitler could no longer get rid of Jews through emigrations, therefore, made a plan to segregate Jews into designated cities called Ghettos.
14
Ghettos were overcrowded, barbed wired, & surrounded by stone walls.
Racist Germans hoped Jews would just die inside the Ghetto.
15
Jewish Resistance Jewish people found many ways to survive.
In Warsaw (city in Poland), the Jews organized. Kept their traditions alive, secret schools, & produced plays/concerts. Scholars kept records so that one day people would find out the truth.
16
Final Solution Genocide
Hitler became impatient because Jews wouldn’t die fast enough, therefore, came up with a plan---Final Solution. Genocide: systematic plan to kill the Jews. Internment camps & Gas Chambers.
19
Survivors of the Holocaust
6 million European Jews died in death camps & massacres. Some people helped them hide took huge risks. Those that survived told their stories. Records found of the mass killings (diaries, memories, name records, etc.)
