Presentation on theme: "Transformations Main Idea Notes Transformation"— Presentation transcript:

1 Transformations Main Idea Notes Transformation
Changes the position or orientation of a figure. There are 4 types of transformations.

2 Transformations Main Idea Notes Congruent Symbol: ≅
Means that figures are exactly the same size and shape. The first 3 transformations are congruent to the original figure.

3 4 Types of Transformations
Slide 4 Types of Transformations Main Idea Notes Translation Figure slides along a straight line without turning.

4 Example of a Translation on the Coordinate Plane
The figure slides along a straight line. Example of a Translation on the Coordinate Plane Reading Math: A’ read “A prime” is used to represent the point on the image that corresponds to point A on the original figure (pre-image).

5 4 Types of Transformations
Flip 4 Types of Transformations Main Idea Notes Reflection Figure flips across a line of reflection (x or y-axis), creating a mirror image.

6 Example of a Reflection on the Coordinate Plane
The figure flips across the y-axis. Example of a Reflection on the Coordinate Plane

7 4 Types of Transformations
Turn 4 Types of Transformations Main Idea Notes Rotation Figure turns around a fixed point (origin).

8 Example of a Rotation in the Coordinate Plane
y The figure turns around a fixed point. Example of a Rotation in the Coordinate Plane

9 Transformations Main Idea Notes Similar Symbol: ∼
Means that figures have the same shape but are not necessarily the same size. The 4th transformation is similar to the original figure.

10 4 Types of Transformations
Dilation 4 Types of Transformations Main Idea Notes Dilation Figure’s size changes (bigger or smaller).

11 Example of a Dilation on the Coordinate Plane
The figure is enlarged. Example of a Dilation on the Coordinate Plane

12 Original figure. (Named as Figure A,B,C.)
Main Idea Notes Pre-Image Original figure. (Named as Figure A,B,C.) Image Name for the resulting or transformed figure. (Named as Figure A’,B’,C’.) image
