Being a French Missionary
Missionaries – People who left their native country to live in another for the purpose of converting the natives Most populous group – Jesuits Lived with the American Indians Adapted to some of their cultures Tried to convert them to Christianity Main purpose: Bring more people to the Church Salvation of those who hadn’t yet heard the word

Missionaries Fathers Jogues and Raymbault – Worked with the Huron in what is today Ontario Eventually killed by the Iroquois Father Menard – Worked with escaped Huron in western Lake Superior area Got separated one day, never heard from again Father Allouez – Looked for Menard in Upper Peninsula Ends up finding copper and the Mississippi River Allouez is buried in Niles, no harsh end for him

Father Marquette 1668 – Settles Sault Ste. Marie
Today, the oldest permanent European settlement in Michigan Works at a Mission in St. Ignace Hears from the Natives about a body of water they call “Mesippi” Received permission from the French government to explore it

Marquette, Jolliet, and the Mississippi River
1673 – Father Marquette, Louis Jolliet, and five others leave St. Ignace Local Indians warn them of monsters and people who do not receive strangers Went away because they were willing to die to help others convert Never found angry Natives Were worried that they would run into the Spanish On the return, Marquette develops dysentery and dies near Ludington Louis Jolliet loses all his notes when his canoe tipped over
