Lobster Fishing In the 1940s and 1950s, the demand for lobsters from New England grew tremendously. By the early 1970s scientists feared that overfishing had reduced the Atlantic’s lobster populations to dangerously low levels. They campaigned for conservation laws to protect the crustaceans.

Since then, lobster populations have increased, and catches have nearly doubled from their previous levels. Limits on the size and number of catches are partially responsible for the increase, but researchers believe other factors have also played a role. A slight rise in water temperature has made the lobsters more active and allowed them to grow faster. In addition, the tons of bait that fishers dump overboard to lure lobsters into their traps provide the food they need to grow. How has human activity impacted lobster populations in the Pacific?
