1 LESSON 3 Module 4: Working with Images Banners

2 In this lesson, we will: Investigate different banner types.
Collect various banners and analyze their effectiveness. Create a banner representing something about you.

3 Guiding Questions What is the purpose of a Web site banner?
How do banners influence the audience? Can you recall a specific banner that influenced you? How? Use the guiding questions as a class starter, allowing the students time to answer the questions in their journal. Discuss student answers to the questions.

Types of banners: Examples of banners: Templates for banners: Use Web sites to give background information and show examples.

6 Critique Time! Join a critic team and receive the Professional Critic Team Form. Go to the Internet to evaluate different types of banners. Fill in the form and give it to the Critic Director (me!). Student Activity

7 Banner Design Review your journal entry Draw 5 sketches
Choose one sketch and finalize Add text if appropriate. Add color using colored pencils or markers. Add your rationale for choosing the symbols and colors for your banner Explain how this banner will sell something representing you Handout: S.4.3.WS_Banners Review the list of interests, activities, and beliefs in your journal. Draw 5 sketches of different combinations representing these in your journal. On the paper provided, choose one sketch and finalize it. Add text if appropriate. Add color using colored pencils or markers. Under the final banner, add your rationale for choosing the symbols and colors for their banner. Explain how this banner will sell something representing you.

A client would like you to design a banner that would cause the user to notice a product on the page. What type of banner would you create? Ask students to answer questions in their journal, with a partner, or as a whole class.
