4 African Americans in the War
Agrippa Hull Some sided with the British because they were promised freedom. Washington asked Congress to enlist free African Americans. Many southerners opposed allowing African Americans to fight because they were afraid of revolt. As many as 5,000 joined the Patriots. By the war’s end, every state except South Carolina enlisted African Americans.
