7 Sentencing Read the the paragraph and answer the questions:
What are the purposes of punishing offenders? What must the judge passing sentence take into account? What types of sentences can the Crown Court impose? Do exercise VIII

8 Adversarial/inquisitorial systems
Check your answers to exercise X DISCUSS: What are the advantages and disadvantages of the two systems? Consider the points of view of the judge and the defendant.

Study the case R v Dietschmann (2003) read the case summary and the court’s ruling What do you think of the court’s finding? Read the judge’s instruction to the jury. Can you summarize it in plain English?
