Howdy Bio Ninjas! Set up Journals: Page:_______ Title: Defense EQ: How do animal systems interact to defend the body?
2
Today’s Standard: describe the interactions that occur among [animal] systems that perform the functions of…defense from injury or illness… (B.10A)
3
Defense against Illness Copy this diagram into your notes!
SYSTEMS INVOLVED Defense Integumentary (1st line of defense) Immune (2nd line of defense) Circulatory Copy this diagram into your notes!
4
1. INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM Main Parts/Key terms: Skin Hair Nails
Integument: something that covers or encloses for the purpose of protection Main Parts/Key terms: Skin Hair Nails *the integumentary systems for animals may include scales, shells, slime, feathers, hair etc.
5
1. INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM Main Functions: Holds in water/fluids
Keeps out foreign objects Helps control body temperature
6
The Integumentary system acts as a wall or barrier to any outside threats!
7
Occasionally threats make it past the wall…
8
Notes: New section/system
9
2. IMMUNE SYSTEM (lymphatic)
Main Parts/Key terms: Antibodies (protective proteins) T-cells B-cells
10
B-Cells, Antibodies and T-cells are the soldiers that fight infections if they get past the wall…
11
2. IMMUNE SYSTEM Main Functions:
B-cells produce antibodies that attack pathogens in the blood T-cells attack invaders B-cells, T-cells, and antibodies are specific to what they attack
14
Notes New section/system
15
3. CIRCULATORY SYSTEM RECAP
Main Parts/Key Words: Blood vessels Heart White blood cells (includes B- and T-cells)
16
3. CIRCULATORY SYSTEM Main Functions:
Transports antibodies & white blood cells Transports toxins and waste products to be removed
17
MID-LESSON DEBRIEF: Explain how the three systems work together to defend the body against illness. The integumentary system is the first line of defense, keeping out most invaders. The immune system (b and t cells) kicks in when something gets past the integumentary system, and uses the circulatory system to move within the body.
18
ALLERGIC REACTIONS are your body overreacting to certain substances.
Allergies are the result of a hypersensitive immune system.

SYSTEMS THAT PREVENT INJURY Copy this diagram into your notes!
Nervous Endocrine Skeletal Muscular Copy this diagram into your notes!

1. NERVOUS & ENDOCRINE SYSTEMS
Electrical & chemical responses Reflexes Hormones
23
New Section/System
24
2. SKELETAL SYSTEM Main Parts/Key Terms: Bones Joints
Ligaments (join bone to bone) Tendons (join muscle to bone) Cartilage
25
2. SKELETAL SYSTEM Main Functions: Gives support & structure
Protects internal organs Helps you move
27
New Section/System
28
3. MUSCULAR SYSTEM Main Parts/Key terms: Main Function: Smooth muscle
involuntary movement Cardiac (heart) muscle Skeletal muscle voluntary movement Main Function: Moves your body
30
DEBRIEF: Explain how the four systems work together to prevent injury if you touch a hot stove. The nervous & endocrine systems recognize the increased threat/change in the environment, and send signals to the skeletal & muscular systems to move the body away from injury.
