1 Physics 11 Mr. Jean November 22nd, 2011

2 The plan: Video Clip of the day Review of yesterday Work
Kinetic Energy Potential Energy Pre-test questions

3 The rest of the year: Chapter #6 Chapter #7 Chapter #8 - #9 2 Weeks
Work, Power & Efficiency Chapter #7 Conservation of energy Chapter #8 - #9 Waves, Sound & Light

4 Work: In physics work is the product of the force and the total change of distance. W = F∆d W = Energy required to move an object in joules (J) F = Newton’s of force required to move an object (N) d = Total distance moved (m)

5 Example: A force of 800N is required to push an object. The object is pushed at a constant rate of speed for 3 meters. How much work was needed to move this object? 800N x 3m = 2400J 2400J of energy were needed.

6 Kinetic Energy:

7 Units:

8 Kinetic Energy Example:
A 6kg curling stone is at rest. It is accelerated to 20m/s. 1) Calculate the kinetic energy at rest.

9 Frame the problem: Key points: The stone started out at rest
A moving object has kinetic energy. An object at rest has no kinetic energy. The amount of kinetic energy is directly related to the stones mass and velocity.

10 Calculations at rest:

11 Kinetic Energy Example:
A 6kg curling stone is at rest. It is accelerated to 20m/s. 2) Calculate the kinetic energy in motion.

12 Potential Energy: This is the energy which is stored in an object.
Example: A rock sitting on a desk has potential energy (The rock could fall). The height difference from the table to the ground creates a potential energy.

13 Gravitational Potential:

14 Potential Energy Units:

15 Example: What is the potential energy stored if a 3kg rock is 0.68 meters above the ground?

19 Next lesson: ENERGY = JOULES
Next day, I would like to show you how these three topics Work, Potential Energy and Kinetic Energy are all related. Not just by the common unit of joules, but how they function as a system and at any stage of motion or activity.

20 Quiz on November 24th: Chapter #4: Chapter #5: Friction Net forces
Force diagrams Application problems Chapter #5: 2d applied Constant accelerations

21 To do: Review Pre-Test Questions
