New Engineering Design Process
Mr. AE’s class
2
Define the Problem A.) Questions to ask when defining the problem: What is the issue? Is it worthwhile issue to solve? Has it already been solved? What is it you want to improve? B.) Example Definition: Explaining the different aspects of the issues including constraints/criteria Constraints: requirements needed for the solution to be viable (must have) Criteria: Aspects of design that the engineer “wants” to be included (would like to have) C.) In GTT-this is done by filling out a “Design Brief”
3
Generating Concepts A.) what is it that needs to be changed/made? Including: Size(s) Material(s) Weight Etc. B.) Example Definition: Gathering information that starts to help form ideas on how to “Develop Solutions.”
4
Develop a Solution A.) Create multiple solutions (usually sketches) B.) Use a “Decision Matrix” to decide which sketch/idea meets the constraints/criteria (that the engineer/contactor defined as the Design Brief) C.) Example Definition: Narrowing down to one idea to move forward with that meets all/most constraints and criteria.
5
Construct/Test Prototype
A.) Example Definition: Create a model (physical or electronic) of the solution to see if it actually work to solve the problem
6
Evaluate Solution A.) Does this model/prototype actually solve the program trying to be solved? Can the solution be improved upon? B.) Example Definition: Does (or how well does) the solution solve the problem?
7
Present Solution A.) Need to tell the client what the solution is and how it solves the problem. B.) Example Definition: Show the client how you solved the problem
