1 8.5 Using the Distributive Property
Assignment 17: 8.5 WB Pg.109 # 2 – 26 even

2 How to divide a polynomial by a monomial:
To divide a polynomial by a monomial, divide each term of the polynomial by the monomial and add the results. Step 1: Find the GCF of ALL terms Step 2: Divide each term by the GCF. Step 3: Write a product of the GCF and the new polynomial from step 2. The Greatest Monomial Factor of a Polynomial is simply the GCF of its terms.

3 Example: Factor Step 1: Find the GCF of all terms.
Step 2: Make a new polynomial by multiplying the non-bold factors together to get your NEW polynomial Step 3: Write the product of your GCF from step 1 and your new polynomial from step 2

4 Factoring by Grouping Factoring by grouping is just like factoring out a common monomial. Example: The common factor here is 4x. The common factor here is y. The common factor here is (y – z).

5 Example: Step 2: See what the common factor will be.
Step 1: Factor out common factors. Step 2: See what the common factor will be. Step 3: Use the rule of opposites if needed to group. Step 4: Factor using grouping.

6 Zero–Product Property
A product of factors is zero if and only if (iff) one or more of the factors is zero.

7 Standard Form An equation is in standard form when one side is equal to zero and the other side is a simplified polynomial arranged in order of decreasing degree of the variable.

8 Example: Solve using the zero product property
= 0 Step 1: Factor out common factors. = 0 Step 2: See what the common factor will be. Step 3: Use the rule of opposites if needed to group. Step 4: Factor using grouping. Step 5: Set each factor equal to ZERO. Step 6: Solve.
