OM yash-chhandasaam- R^ishhabho vishva-ruupaH chhandobhyo.adhya- mR^itaath-sambabhuuva The Divine OM is all pervasive and essence of all the Vedas (chhandas). May the Supreme One, who has sprung into being from the immortal hymns, cheer and strengthen me with intelligence.

3. sa mendro medhayaa spR^iNotu amR^itasya deva-dhaaraNo bhuuyaasam
May the Supreme One strengthen me with intelligence.
I pray that I may be the possessor of immortality; i.e., May I be a fit recipient of the knowledge of the Self that leads to immortality .

4. shariiraM me vicharshhaNam jihvaa me madhumattamaa
May my body (shariiraM) be vigorous and fit to acquire that knowledge.
May my tongue be extremely sweet.

5. karNaabhyaaM bhuuri- vishruvam bramhaNaH kosho.asi medhayaa pihitaH
May I listen abundantly with my ears so that I may learn well.
You are the sheath of the Supreme Being veiled by intelligence.

6. shrutaM me gopaaya || OM shaantiH shaantiH shaantiH ||
Protect (gopaaya) all that I have learnt (shrutaM - heard) from my preceptor.

7. OM medhaa-devii jushhamaaNaa na aagaad- vishvavaachii bhadraa sumanasya-maanaa
May the all-pervasive Goddess of intellect visit us. She is happy with us and brings us prosperity and goodness.

8. tvayaa jushhTaa nudamaanaa duruktaan bR^ihad-vadema vidathe suviiraaH
Oh Goddess! We were delighting in futile gossip before Your visit. By Your grace, may we became enlightened and and express the Supreme Truth along with our heroic sons and disciples.

Oh Goddess of intellect! Blessed by You, one becomes a rishi (seer) and the knower of Brahman or God.

We pray to that Goddess of Intellect to grant us the various forms of wealth.

May Lord Indra grant us inner knowledge.
May Goddess Saraswati grant us intelligence.

May the two Ashwins wearing garlands of lotus flowers, grant us knowledge (wisdom).

13. apsaraasu cha yaa medhaa gandharveshhu cha yanmanaH
Grant us that intelligence, possessed by the celestial women and the mental power of the
celestial musicians.

Let that divine intelligence associated with Mother Sarasvati and expressed in the Vedas awaken in us. May I be blessed with that intelligence which spreads like fragrance.

May Lord Indra grant us intelligence, progeny and the strength arising from the control of one’s senses.
