About this PowerPoint DiscoverU is an exciting week for our community to come together and support all students in exploring career and college options. Through fun activities in school and in the community, students throughout Seattle and South King County will have opportunities to explore their futures.

DISCOVERU— WHAT IS IT? DiscoverU is an exciting week for our community to come together and support all students in exploring career and college options. Through fun activities in school and in the community, students throughout Seattle and South King County will have opportunities to explore their futures. GOALS Provide all students pre-kindergarten to college the opportunity to explore their interests and learn about college pathways and career options. Engage with families, teachers, and the broader community in supporting college and career awareness and exploration for all students. Expose high school students to the career opportunities in our region through worksite tours to help them understand the education and skills needed to get there.

DISCOVERU – HOW IT GOT STARTED
Started in 2013 Seattle College Access Network & High School Counselors Doing DiscoverU region-wide provides the opportunity to: impact more students, use the same language and bring more stakeholders into the mix.

DISCOVERU – GOALS Provide all students pre-kindergarten to college the opportunity to explore their interests and learn about college pathways and career options. Engage with families, teachers, and the broader community in supporting college and career awareness and exploration for all students. MONDAY – OCTOBER 23 Have students ever asked you, “Why do I need to learn this?” Take time to show them how classroom content connects to careers in our economy.

TUESDAY – OCTOBER 24 Help students explore the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers available to them in the Puget Sound region.

WEDNESDAY– OCTOBER 25 Today, we’re promoting a college-going culture! Share college knowledge and show off your school spirit!

THURSDAY – OCTOBER 26 Today, we honor our on-the-job heroes. They can be anyone, from an everyday hero in your life to a hidden figure in history.

FRIDAY – OCTOBER 27 When students look into their futures, what do they see? Set up a fun a photo booth for students to cap off DiscoverU week! Tag us in social & use the #DiscoverUWA hashtag!

Career-a-Day THEME DAY: Classroom to Career HOW TO:
Highlight careers that use the content from the class you teach Consider unique jobs, for example, many careers like public relations and public policy require strong writing skills, not only journalism Discuss other skills used in the classroom that you need on-the-job, like note-taking and time management

“I Spy” CAREERS THEME DAY: Classroom to Career Day HOW TO:
Have students brainstorm all the jobs and careers that they relied on or interacted with from the minute they woke up to when they got to class. For example: Someone wrote their textbook and created the graphics in it Someone wired the electricity in their school and plumbed the bathrooms Someone drove the bus they took to school Reflect on the jobs and what it means for career opportunities in the future

THEME DAY: DiscoverSTEM Day HOW TO: Show examples of “It Takes a Lot of Jobs” posters Students pick a object, event or service they like or use Students research jobs that go into that Make a poster

Teacher College Pathway
THEME DAY: College Gear Day HOW TO: Complete the DiscoverU Door Decoration Poster with your college pathway Share with students about your college experience and give them time to ask questions— they’re really curious!

College Knowledge Word-of-the-Day
THEME DAY: College Gear Day HOW TO: Using the College Knowledge materials, select 5 important college terms from the glossary, such as “financial aid” and “tuition” Each day in class, share and discuss one of the terms You can even create a game to check student understanding of the words later in the week Share the online link for the College Knowledge materials so your students know about the resource

STEM Career Grab Bag THEME DAY: DiscoverSTEM HOW TO:
Create a list of various STEM careers After cutting them up, put the careers in a bag Have students draw one of the careers Have students research about the career they picked and what skills and education requirements they would need to prepare for that career

Hero Profiles THEME DAY: Community Heroes Day HOW TO:
Have students select a hero they look up to in their community or life Have students write about that person’s pathway and the skills they need to be successful in their job. For example, Beyoncé isn’t only good at dancing or singing, she also needs to know how to understand business contracts, interview, and manage a busy schedule

Photo Booth Fun THEME DAY: Flash Forward Friday HOW TO:
Have students design an awesome backdrop for the Flash Forward Friday photo booth Help students transport themselves into the future and envision where they want to be by using the DiscoverU photo booth signs Tag us in social & use the #DiscoverUWA hashtag!
