Class Capture Jacob Cratsa Advisor: Dr. C. David Shaffer Westminster College

2 What is Class Capture? Class Capture is a type of technology often referred to as Lecture Capture Lecture Capture describes the various technologies and methods used to record lectures and enhance the classroom experience through the aid of multimedia Class Capture is an enhanced way to take notes

3 Problems with Taking Notes
Getting everything down in time Recognizing all the important information the first time Remembering why you wrote that particular note down Perhaps you simply have a bad writing hand

4 Problems with Recording a lecture
Time spent listening to entire recording Finding a key point Relating to written notes Expensive solutions

5 Existing Technologies
Smart Pens PerfectNotes Task specific Programs like Dragon Speech

6 My solution A web based program/system for every student in a class to take notes Inspired by Universal Design Concepts All notes taken are linked to a recording of the class which can be navigated using typed notes taken at the time of the recording

7 Notes + Recording The primary function of Class Capture
An audio recording is combined with typed notes so that the notes become clickable bookmarks for the recording

8 Web-based design Allows Class Capture to be installed on only one machine but used by the entire classroom Students can take their notes and play them back from their own computers Gives instructor greater control over lecture

9 Site Design Students and Instructors both login to the site with Instructors managing the accounts For the Instructor there is: a class management page notes playback page For the students there is: an account page note taking page

10 Log in screen

11 Student’s account

12 Taking notes

13 Instructor’s account

14 Notes playback

15 How it works Uses html, javascript, server side php and the HTML5 audio player A bookmark is created whenever you stop typing A value of the local time, relative to the start of the recording, is saved to the server for each bookmark

16 Media Players HTML5 used to play back the recording
VLC used to make the recordings during testing Cross-platform compatibility requires changeable apps

17 Starting a class Session
The Instructor is provided a user manual on proper use of Class Capture Instructor’s web-based interface does not start the recording Instructors have the freedom to use what they wish to make the recording but must save as .wav with _”month”-”day”-”year” as the title Talk about starting/stoping lecture when I bring up the manual

18 Advantages For Students who miss a class
Enhanced ability to review the lecture Improved course accessibility with future development

19 Universal Design An accessibility design principal where the product can be used effectively by anyone Class Capture was originally meant to implement this idea Future development with Universal Design would allow for more advanced uses of Class Capture

20 Future Possibilities This project could be expanded on much more in the future. Adding a speech to text converter would allow individuals with hearing loss to use the application Instructors could even use this to closely monitor the note taking ability of their students Include video
