Unit 4 – World Wars and the Great Depression
LT: I will know how the Great Depression impacted Washington, which I will demonstrate in a proposal, so that I can…

Warm Up Given what you now know about The Great Depression, what do you think the government needed to do to help the economy recover?

The NEW DEal 1932, one of the hardest years of the Great Depression, at least one-quarter of the American workforce was unemployed. President Roosevelt was elected in 1933 The New Deal was a series of programs that the government created between to help the country get out of the depression.

Put america back to work!
Alphabet soup of new government agencies. Created jobs building roads, bridges, buildings, parks, and schools, painting murals, creating mosaics and other public art, building up the country by putting people back to work. Hired writers, dancers, artists etc. to create art and get paid for it! Fun fact – Ms. Rinzler’s grandfather was a doctor in the civilian conservation corps – Doctor for young men who were sent to do forestry work.

The New Deal The New Deal offered hope and restored the faith of the American people in their government. It also transformed the federal government into something designed to protect the American economy from falling into another depression. Fun fact – Ms. Rinzler named her dog Frankie after Franklin Roosevelt because she likes the New Deal.

The new deal This is the Cedar River in Soon after, a New Deal program paid to dredge the river. How is it different now?

The new deal The New Deal paid for many development and relief programs around the country during the Great Depression. This is a wood-cutting operation east of Renton, also in 1934. How do you think this (and the river project) might have helped Renton grow?

Task Read pages Look at the examples of different services provided in the New Deal. Imagine you are the government and you receive a letter from an unemployed worker in You will need to imagine a specific backstory for that worker so that you can write a letter back in which you…. Sympathize with their situation. Suggest a New Deal project to take part in. Explain how that project could help them in their situation. Thank them for their letter.
