Stem and Leaf Plot
2
What is a Stem and Leaf Plot?
Stem and Leaf Plot is a way to plot/show a collection of numbers. The “stem” shows the tens place. The “leaf” shows the ones place.
3
The “Stem” The “stem” shows the tens place and is listed on the left-hand side of the t-chart. The numbers in the “stem” should be listed in order from least to greatest.
4
The “Leaf” The “leaf” shows the ones place.
The “leaf” is placed on the right-hand side of the t-chart. Each ones digit should be represented, so numbers may be seen more than once. These numbers should also be in order.
5
Reading a Stem and Leaf Plot
Remember that the stem shows tens and the leaf shows ones. So, in the plot to the right the following numbers are represented:
6
Reading a Stem and Leaf Plot
What number in the sixties is represented? Is 56 represented? What number appears more than once on this plot? Name a number that is shown in the forties.
7
Making a Stem and Leaf Plot
To make a stem and leaf plot, your collection of numbers/data must be in order from least to greatest. Next, group all numbers together that begin with the same digit in the tens place. EX) 12,15,18 23, 24, 24, 26 30, 31, 32, 38
8
Making a Stem and Leaf Plot
Next, draw a t-chart. Add all tens digits to the left-hand side in order from least to greatest. Add all coordinating ones digits in order from least to greatest on the right-hand side.
9
12, 15, 18, 23, 24, 24, 26, 30, 31, 32, 38 2, 5, 8 1 2 3, 4, 4, 6 3 0, 1, 2, 8
10
Your Turn Put the following numbers on a stem and leaf plot.
02, 05, 12, 14, 18, 23, 26, 26, 28, 32, 35 2, 5 1 2, 4, 8 2 3, 6, 6, 8 3 2, 5
11
Small Group Game Materials: Notebook paper, pencil, a pair of dice
Each group member takes a turn rolling the dice. One group member records all of the numbers that are made. There must be 20 numbers. Each group member must then take their data collection and create a stem and leaf plot. Group members may work together, but each student must have a paper to turn in.

Day 2
14
Review A stem and leaf plot shows a collection of numbers, in order, broken down into tens and ones. Group discussion: What does the stem show? What does the leaf represent?
15
Stem Yes, the stem represents the tens place.
So, the number 1 in the stem column is not just a 1, it is a 10. What would a 6 stem represent? An 8? A 2?
16
Leaf Yes, the leaf column represents the ones place.
Remember, you may see numbers more than once in the ones column.
17
Practice Reading In the plot above:
What was the highest score on the test? What was the lowest score? Did anyone make a 76? How many people made an A (90 or better)?
18
Practice Writing Use the following numbers to create a stem and leaf plot. 12, 15, 17, 22, 24, 24, 25, 37, 39, 41, 46, 46
19
Small Group Activity Plots Around The Room
Travel with your group to different areas around the room creating stem and leaf plots. Do not move to a new area until told to do so. Each member should take a turn writing the plot, and all members should help with the creation. 3 stem and leave plots should be turned in by your group for your group grade today.
