Pass Protection Fundamentals
Indianapolis Glazier Clinic January 25th, 2014
2
Philosophy Pass Protection is the most important component in offensive football The first question that must be answered for us in a game week is “how are we going to protect” Everyone on the offensive side of the ball is responsible for protecting the quarterback (OL/RB’s/TE/WR’s) GET THE BALL OUT QUICK “1,2,3 throw the (ball) away”—Tom Moore 2012—221/348 attempts (63.5%), 3496 yards passing, 48 TD’s/10 INT’s, 5 SACKS allowed Last two seasons 565 attempts, 10 sacks allowed (1 sack per 56.5 attempts)
3
Sets Conventional Sets All Sets are short sets
Distance/Space are the enemy of every offensive lineman Two Step sets One, Two, Punch Handshake Relationship (outside foot little toe to big toe) Middle of the Cylinder Camera the quarterback
4
Sets Jumps/Snags Eliminate space and move junction point
Use element of surprise Jumps (tackle vs. wide rush) Drop step, open hips and turn towards the sideline Track DE’s ear hole (middle of the cylinder) Fast/Slow/Fast tempo (resettle) Snags (Guards/Centers) Punch, one/two Get into him before he can get going
5
Common Mistakes In Kick Slide
Pushing off the inside Foot Leading with the knee not with the ankle Rocking out/weight shifting to the the outside foot Getting out of your base

THE PUNCH The Punch is a Jab, not a Knock Out
Punch vs. Push, timing is everything Must keep your hips out of the punch The goal is to keep him away from you and create separation Push yourself away from him (in run we push the defender away from us) Slight bend in the arms so that they may act as a shock absorber and the defender cannot knock you off balance Thumbs to the defenders throat Seat your hands in the defenders chest so that you can immediately respond to what he does
9
Lag Principle Lag behind defenders movement
Do not try to stay in front of him. 50/50 Hand Pressure with defender in front of you 60/40 when the defender moves to one side or the other. Run defender into an adjacent offensive lineman
10
Junction Point Reads Guard Tackles In range Out of Range
Chest (take Chest) Hat out, PUNCH OUT! Shoulder (Punch and off) Tackles Chest (take chest) Shoulder (punch and off) Out of Range Arm Bar
11
Counter Moves Hop Hop Myagi Counters a bull rush
It’s the ONLY way to regain leverage once you’ve lost it to a bull rush Don’t stop him, discourage him Hop Hop and Chop Hop Hop and Spin Myagi Counters a chop Don’t try to hang on—you will get knocked off balance “Wax on, Wax off”
12
Counter Moves Centerline Spin Pull Counters a rip
Hand over hand to hit a small area Small target Spin Walk around the cylinder Sit back and stay in down in your base Pull Follow your hands! Don’t sit back Don’t drop your head

Defending against Pass Rush Games
Tackle/End Stunts Guard Hat out PUNCH OUT (side shuck) Speed it up, make it happen NOW. No bumping. Force the issue. MUST DENY THE PENETRATOR AT ALL COSTS Tackle Drag hand vs. Inside Tech Two step Magoo is your key “Rip the sink off of the wall” End/Tackle Stunts Tackle Posting laterally, side shuck the DE down physically across the face of the Guard Protect your Guard, DT is a secondary priority DENY PENETRATION— FORCE THE ISSUE. Kick slide back to recover and block DT Guard Look for Two step Magoo “Rip sink off of the wall”
