Everyday at 7:45 we will have morning assembly!
Please make sure that your child has a book in his or her book bag to read from 7:30-7:45. Mrs. French and Mrs. Gaines will make announcements at this time as well as recognize all birthdays for that day. We will also have a moment of silence and say the pledge of allegiance.

Communication Agendas - Please make sure to sign your child's agenda every night and look for any notes from your child’s teacher. Teacher Webpage – Please take the time to view your child’s teacher’s webpage. Here you will find our calendar, schedule, important announcements, grade appropriate links, and ways to contact your child’s teacher. Remind 101 – Please make sure that you have signed up to receive quick reminders and information. Class Dojo – We use this as a part of our behavior management system. It is a quick way to see your child’s behavior each day and communicate directly with your child’s teacher.

Behavior Every student’s behavior will be monitored daily using Dojo points. The Dojo system allows us to record both positive and negative points earned throughout the day and parents are able to check in through their parent log-in code. The parent portal allows parents to see a detailed list of every point given to their student and every point taken away from their student throughout the school day. The following key tells how the daily points correlate to a conduct color: Blue: +3 or more positive points Green: 0, 1, or 2 positive points Yellow: 1 negative point Red: 2 or more negative points

Reading Reading Goal for First Grade – 60 wpm
Sight Word Goal – 600 words Lexile Level Goal – 350L Center /Station work will include computer time, ELA, Social Studies and Science, Reading assignments, word work, sight words, vocabulary, and writing Homework assignments include reading 20 minutes daily. Please study the weekly sight words on the homework sheet each night. These are individualized for each child. They will be tested weekly! Homework will also include reading fluency passages. Guided Reading; daily teacher guided, small group instruction. Daily phonics instruction STEM will also be integrated in reading.

Reading Incentive Goals and Accelerated Reader
8 books per nine week period (the 1st nine week goal will be adjusted) For students reading chapter books, every 100 pages count as 1 book Celebrations at the end of every 9 weeks Lexile Levels will help students find books that are just right for them Students will be required to make at least an 80% on the accelerated reader quiz for each of their books. Students can only take quizzes on books within their Lexile level. Accelerated Reader quizzes can only be taken at school during regular school hours.

Math Daily Calendar Math
In first grade, students realize that math involves solving problems through the use of appropriate strategies. Furthermore, students will be able to show what they know using pictures, manipulatives, and various strategies. Fact Fluency Math Computation goal = 37 by May Math will also be integrated in STEM

Students will write across the curriculum, integrating many subjects.
Writing First Grade Units of Study in writing will focus on opinion, informative and narrative writing. Writer’s Workshop will include working on the writing process. Students will have daily writing instruction. Students will write across the curriculum, integrating many subjects. Students will use correct letter formation, capitalization, and punctuation

Social Studies Units in Social Studies include: Our National Heritage
A Changing Country Inventors in the United States Community Helpers We Are Alike, We are Different Social Studies will also be integrated into reading, writing, and STEM.

Science Units in Science include: Weather and Seasons
Plants and Animals Magnets Light and Sound STEM – Our school goal is to become STEM certified this school year. We are working hard to create problem Solvers and independent learners.

STEM In first grade this year, our year long STEM project focus will be “Life on the Farm.” Our students will have the opportunity to help raise chickens. We will be caring for them, collecting their eggs, taking data on the amount of eggs laid during each season and weather type, comparing and contrasting the eggs of different types of chickens, observing what types of foods chickens prefer, etc. We can not wait to get started with this project and hope that your children have an experience that will leave a lasting impression while learning new skills and solving real life problems.

Progress Reports/Report Cards
Beginning this year, when your child receives a progress report and a report card, you will see actual grades. The grading scale is as follows: A = B = 80-89 C = 71-79 D = 70 F = 69 and below

Specials Students will rotate daily between Music, Art, and P.E. class. Students will have STEM class one day each week in addition to their regularly scheduled specials classes! On P.E. days please make sure that your child wears tennis shoes and dresses appropriately.

Parent Involvement Our school has many opportunities throughout the year where volunteers are needed. A few of the opportunities include but are not limited to… Fall Festival Secret Santa Shop Book Fairs Field Day STEM Day *Volunteer training is on Tuesday, August the 29th at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August the 31st at 2:00 p.m., or Tuesday, September 5th at 6:00 p.m. (All will be held in room 114)

Homework Homework is given on Friday and is due the following Friday. It includes reading for 20 minutes, reviewing sight words, reading a fluency passage, and a math review assignment. The first grade team collaborates to come with the most beneficial assignments, that support the curriculum taught at school. The sight words on the homework sheet for each week will be tested weekly..

Education Galaxy Education Galaxy is a program that our students love using. This program includes both reading and math for 1st grade. The students will take a pretest and are then able to practice the skills that need improvement. This program can be accessed at home. Please be on the lookout for login information.
