GREEK POLIS Polis: city-state; basic political unit of ancient Greece
Each polis was independent but shared the following features: Location: included a city and surrounding villages, fields and orchards Acropolis: fortified center; religious center Agora: public square that served as the political center of the polis

GREEK POLIS Population included: Average size: 5,000 males
Citizens with political rights (adult males) Citizens with no political rights (women, children) Non-citizens (slaves, foreign-born) Average size: 5,000 males Men expected to participate in government and military
