Key Terms Homicide The killing of one person by another, either intentionally or unintentionally *note: Homicide includes accidents and murder

Key Terms Murder Killing someone with malice of forethought.
*note: Murder may be done while committing another crime. Murder is always illegal.

Key Terms First-degree murder
Killing a person with malice of forethought; the killing was planned. It was done deliberately.

Key Terms Second-degree murder
Killing done during a crime deemed dangerous to a human life. The crime was not committed with the intention of killing.

Key Terms Voluntary manslaughter
Killing someone intentionally but without malice of forethought. *note: an example is a crime of passion, where a lover is killed because of jealousy. The intention was to kill, but there was no malice of forethought because it wasn’t planned.

Killing someone but without intent to kill and without conscious disregard for human life. *note: sometimes fatal collisions are charged as involuntary manslaughter

Let’s Practice! A troubled 17-year-old girl has slowly poisoned her parents each night at dinner. After three months, she came home to find them dead on the kitchen floor. The coroner’s report indicated that cyanide poisoning caused their deaths.

Let’s Practice! Three 16-year-olds were hanging out at the park drinking alcohol. One boy started shoving his friend. Soon the shoving escalated into punching. One boy tripped, and his head hit a sharp-edged rock. The boy died before help arrived.

Let’s Practice! Suspicious that his girlfriend was cheating, a 16-year old boy went to her house and found her in bed with his friend. Impulsively, he grabbed the nearest lamp and hit his friend on the head. His friend died two days later.

Let’s Practice! A 17-year-old girl was driving home at night. She flipped through the radio station to find music to keep herself awake. While looking at the dashboard, she swerved into the other lane and hit a car head-on. The driver in the other car died.
