2. Congress of Vienna What was the purpose of the congress?
1. Strengthen countries surrounding France, no more threats from France.
2. The old royal families will be restored (Restauration).
The goal was to stabilize Europe with the old Balance of Powers.

3. How did this work? Russia wanted Poland.
Prussia wanted Rhineland and Westphalia.
Austria wanted pieces of Italy.
They all get what they want, but no one asked the people living in those countries.

Nationalism: a great love for your country, culture and people.
This came with the idea that all people with the same language and culture should live in their own country.
Did the Congress of Vienna even look at this at all?

6. United kingdom of The Netherlands
Founded in 1815 as a ‘buffer’ between France and Prussia with a Dutch king (Willem I).
Problem 1: Catholic south, protestant north.
Problem 2: Language barrier (Dutch- French).
Problem 3: Willem I favoured the Dutch, Belgians had to adjust and didn’t get any of the good jobs.

Willem I sent an army, the French king sent an army. We lost!
Belgium officially a kingdom since 1831.
