Dept of Environment – Fisheries & Sealing The Fisheries and Sealing division focuses on developing viable and sustainable industries that will ensure all revenues and opportunities derived from territorial resources benefit Nunavummiut. The implementation of the Nunavut Fisheries Strategy is a priority. The division works towards maximizing economic opportunities for Nunavummiut while upholding the principles of conservation and sustainability.

3 GN - Nunavut Fisheries Strategy
Commercial fishing is an important and developing sector of the Nunavut economy. The vision of the Nunavut Fisheries Strategy is ―to see fisheries emerge as a driving economic catalyst for Nunavut resulting in increasing prosperity for current and future generations of Nunavummiut recognizing the principles of sustainable use . This Strategy is a commitment to the long- term development of strong, sustainable fisheries across Nunavut; a commitment that combines the strategic vision and objectives of stakeholders for the betterment of Nunavut as a whole.

NUNAVUT MARINE FISHERIES: QUOTAS AND HARBOURS Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans Recommendation 7: The Committee recommends that the Department of Fisheries and Oceans substantially increase its funding for exploratory research in Nunavut’s adjacent waters, and that it commit to a multi-year, multi-species research program. The goal of expanding sustainable fisheries in the North should be further pursued to take advantage of emerging opportunities and to generate much-needed economic and social benefits
