Learning Goals Habits of Mind: Openness, Engagement, Responsibility, Persistence Skills: Rhetorical Knowledge, Critical Thinking Learning Goals: I will apply SOAPSTone to texts. I will use formal rhetorical strategies in my reading, writing, and analysis. Today’s Objective: Analyze and compare texts in order to gain a better understanding of the audience of the time period and qualities they admire

Question On a lined sheet of paper to turn in later today, answer the following, and then compare your answer with a peer. What qualities does our society admire in leaders? How does this differ from previous generations?

1961 Climate News Reel Atlantic Images Music 1962 Oscars
Atlantic Images Music Q3j&index=7 1962 Oscars PgBIZ_7&index=7

JFK Inaugural Speech As we listen to the speech, highlight anything that is similar to Beowulf’s speech: You may use different colors or symbols to indicate which one goes where. Make a key at the top of the speech. 1. Speaker: Who he is, who he is related to, why is he speaking. 2. His previous accomplishments or why he is qualified. 3. What he intends to do (promises he makes). 4. How he intends to accomplish those deeds. 5. Imagery and figurative language that enhances his point. 6. How he uses references to current culture to persuade his audience.

After watching… Complete a SOAPSTone on your paper to turn in today. Cite lines from the text to support your response. Turn in for points!

Venn Diagram: compare/contrast JFK and Beowulf as heroes who represent their society and cultural values. The middle of the diagram should be things JFK and Beowulf have in common. This assignment requires you to use critical thinking skills and inference, two skills we have been working on. Look at green words.

Reflection: What do the qualities of the two characters say about what those societies valued? What promises do they make to their audience? How do they show they are qualified for the job?
