5 Burundi Civil War The Burundi Civil War was an armed conflict lasting from 1993 to The civil war was the result of long standing ethnic divisions between the Hutu and the Tutsi tribes in Burundi. The conflict began following the first multiparty elections in the country since gaining independence from Belgium in 1962 and is seen as formally ending with the swearing in of Pierre Nkurunziza in August The estimated death toll stands at 300,000 killed

6 Economy Burundi is one of the world's poorest countries, owing in part to its landlocked geography, poor legal system, lack of access to education, and the proliferation of HIV/AIDS

10 Health There is less healthcare in Burundi than in most other countries. Life expectancy at birth is estimated at 48.5 years. (2005) A large proportion of the population is undernourished. The HIV/AIDS prevalence has been about 4.2 % in Demographic and Health Surveys completed a survey in Burundi in 1987 and is currently in the process of performing another.
