7 Warm-up Brainstorm your home literacies from childhood and now.
How were/are they congruent or incongruent with the expectations of schooling? How have your home literacies changed over time? If your home literacies have changed, what is the relationship of schooling to those changes?

Create a chart that compares/contrasts Heath, Meier, Gee, Goodman. According to Heath, what is the relationship of the social practice of the bedtime story to children’s in-school literacy learning? Heath describes different “ways with words.” How might these differences account for the over- representation of children of color in special education? Meier makes specific recommendations for things teachers can do. How do these actions build on children’s cultural knowledge?
