Instructor Made Videos Enhance Student Learning
Nancy Simpson, Psy.D. & Heather R. Collins, Ph.D Department of Behavioral & Social Sciences, Trident Technical College Abstract Method Final Exam Score Correlations Instructor made videos have been thought to enhance student engagement and reported course satisfaction but do they promote positive learning outcomes? In this study we examine video completion rates, correlated with quiz averages, chapter tests, and final exam scores. Community college students (N=39) self-enrolled in 2 sections of a hybrid introductory psychology course. The course was compressed, meeting once per week, 3 hours Face-2-Face, for 7 weeks. Fifty percent of the course was in class, fifty percent was online. Chapter tests and video assignments were completed online on the student’s time. The instructor created thirty videos in Camtasia corresponding to topics covered in the text and embedded them in the course management system. Videos ranged from 2 to 14 minutes and displayed the instructor introducing and summarizing the topic while using voice over PowerPoints, White Board, and built in quizzing for each module. Students were graded on, 1) daily attendance quizzes, 2) a pre-test and post-test, 3) 40 online publisher’s quizzes, 4) five chapter exams, and 5) the cumulative department wide final exam. For this analysis the Video Completion Rate was compared to Quiz Mean, Pretest, Posttest, Pre-Post Difference, Exam Mean, and Final Exam Score. Introduction New technologies have enabled instructors to create their own, tailor made pedagogy for use in a variety of course formats (Online, Hybrid, Face-2-Face). Survey research suggests that students hold positive attitudes toward the use of instructor made videos in college level classes (Rose, 2009). Satisfaction data is a first step but, is there evidence that videos enhance learning outcomes? In this study we examined student’s use of videos in a compressed (7 week) hybrid, general psychology course related to quiz and chapter test and final exam scores. Research Question Is the number of instructor made videos, viewed by students, related to increased quiz, chapter test or final exam scores? Summary Video Completion Rate was significantly correlated with Quiz Mean r(39)=.35, p=.02; Exam Mean r(39)= .003 and Final Exam r(39)=.30, p=.057. The Video Completion Rate was not significantly correlated with , Pretest, Posttest, or Pre-Post Difference but interestingly, the Pretest was significantly correlated with Final Exam r(39)=.39 p=.02. These results suggest that instructor made videos can enhance learning outcomes, specifically, quiz scores, chapter tests, and final exam scores. Surprisingly, one of the best indicators for course success was pretest score. As instructors we would like to think that videos and instructional material give value added but an initial pretest may be the best predictor of student success.
