1 Session 4: GOCE for Solid Earth
Chairs: M. van der Meijde J. Ebbing

2 Key questions from GOCE Solid Earth workshop 2012
Is there a real benefit from using GOCE? Global models vs gradients Why use gradients at all? Could gradients be obtained/provided directly from global models (at grid size& altitude of choice)? Recommended to use observed gradients at altitude where they are measured? Gravity with other data Complementarity with seismic tomography to be exploited further? seismology could add vertical information, gravity the spatial continuity but what is needed to make this happen, do we have all the information???

3 Key questions from GOCE Solid Earth workshop 2012
Is there a real benefit from using GOCE? Yes. Global models vs gradients Why use gradients at all? Spatial and discontinuous information! Could gradients be obtained/provided directly from global models (at grid size& altitude of choice)? Local modelling with global grids? Recommended to use observed gradients at altitude where they are measured? Depends on your target of interest. Gravity with other data ??? Complementarity with seismic tomography to be exploited further? seismology could add vertical information, gravity the spatial continuity but what is needed to make this happen, do we have all the information???

4 Seed questions 2014 How is the sub-lithospheric gravity field related to dynamic topography/plate tectonics Bias by inaccurate crustal models? Bias by differences in seismological models? Are all tools for for petrological-geophysical modelling to distinguish composition and temperature in the lithosphere available? Link of seismological models to crustal architecture Joint inversion of multiple data sets What is the link to the magnetic lithosphere and electrical conductivity of the mantle?

5 Scientific roadmap Future application of GOCE data?
Integration with airborne gravity surveys Improvements for geological exploration From crustal thickness to heat-flow Strength of the lithosphere From crust to mantle From crust to core How to convince the larger earth science community to use GOCE products? Invitation for session at next TopoEurope workshop Antibes, October 2015
