Trimble PCS900 Measure-ups using SPS930 UTS
Equipment and Tools Required Complete PCS900 Installed Calibrated and Collimated SPS930 UTS with Tripod and Battery * * Must know how to setup a Total Station SCS900 Data Controller ** ** Must know how to use SCS900 Small Reflective Foil Target (in the UTS Case, double check!) Calibrated SmartLevel or SmartTool Measuring Tape Laptop with PCS900 Measure-Up Excel Spreadsheet

Preparations for PCS900 Measure-up Park the paver on a level surface Ensure the screed is level/flat (ask for assistance if unsure) If the paver has “Rear Extensions”, set the paver to the paving width Ask contractor what the typical paving widths will be for the 3D Paving Project Complete a Measure-up for every width at 1.5’ intervals on each side E.g.: 12’, 15’, 18’, etc… If the paver has “Front Extensions”, measure to the Main Screed which is the Trailing Edge Lower the screed on starter blocks Move the paver forward to remove any tow arm slack Zero tow arms Null screed (e.g.: using screed cranks) Set screed at normal angle of attack

We have to take 7 measurements on the paver Using SPS930 & SCS900 1 MT900 – Left (MTL) 2 Outside Tow Arm Left (TAL) 3 Screed Tip Left (STL) If Dual Masts are installed (highly recommended) 4 MT900 – Right (MTR) 5 Outside Tow Arm Right (TAR) 6 Screed Tip Left (STL) Using Steel Tape 7 Screed Trailing Edge to Tow Point Cylinder Center

Setting up the SPS930 Prior to setup, ensure the SPS930 can see both sides If you do not have 4 reflective targets, have a person hold the reflective target on the Tow Arms and Screed Tips Have a person stand behind the paver and in line with the center of the screed until they can see all points This is where the SPS930 needs to be setup

Trimble PCS900 Measure-ups using SPS930 UTS
Setup the SPS930 Using SCS900 Create a New Site and Work Order E.g.: PCS900 Measure up DATE Add two Control Points First: , 5000, 100 Second: 5200, 5000 (uncheck Elevation) Set Up Instrument Position Setup on a known control point Select Instrument Point (Control1) Select Reference Point (Control2 which is to the North or top) Aim towards the center of the paver CHECK ON “Shooting angle only” Select “Measure” and Complete Instrument Setup Select: “Measure control points”
9

Before measuring with SCS900, you must set the Target Height = 0 (zero) You will also need to change the Target Types between Measurements! 1 MT900 Left = RMT ID 9 Check ID to ensure the MT900 is connected! Lock the SPS930 onto the MT900 Left 2 & 3 Acrylic Target (TAL & STL) 4 MT900 Right = RMT ID 10 Lock the SPS930 onto the MT900 Right 5 & 6 Acrylic Target (TAR & STR) PLEASE NOTE I: You will need to move and connect the MT900 Target prior to measuring the opposite side (i.e.: 4 ) PLEASE NOTE II: Do not use the DR or Autolock (to the Acrylic target) functions to measure the points.

Depending on the MT900 locations vs the Screed Tips, SCS900 should look like this after the measurements are complete: 4 1 2 5 3 6

Measuring Masts Leans Use a Calibrated SmartLevel or SmartTool Measure and Record the Mast Lean In or Out from Screed Tip Place the level against the mast and parallel to the screed trailing edge Determine the Mast Lean in degrees from Vertical (90o) Measure the Mast Lean In or Out from Screed Tip If the mast leans out from the paver, the value is negative (-) If the mast leans in from the paver, the value is positive

Measuring Masts Leans Use a Calibrated SmartLevel or SmartTool Measure and Record the Mast Lean Back or Forward from Screed Tip Place the level against the mast and parallel to the screed trailing edge Determine the Mast Lean in degrees from Vertical (90o) Measure the Mast Lean Back or Forward from Screed Tip If the mast leans forward towards the front, the value is negative (-) If the mast leans back towards the screed, the value is positive
16

In SCS900, go to Volume & COGO > Compute Distance & Area Use the PCS900 Measure-up Excel Spreadsheet to complete the key-in measurement information

Computed PCS900 Entries (2nd Tab)
19
Trimble PCS900 Measure-ups using SPS930 UTS
Turn on the PCS900 display in Manager Mode Go to the Installation Menu Select Machine Settings > Edit Machine Key-in a Machine name (e.g.: make, model and perhaps machine number) Follow the instructions carefully and select the appropriate settings

Machine Settings Example:
21
Trimble PCS900 Measure-ups using SPS930 UTS
In the Installation Menu Select Machine Dimensions > Mast Measurements Read all Instructions carefully and proceed to the “Mast Measurements” PLEASE NOTE III: Change “Measure Method” (F3) to “Center of UTS target”

23
Trimble PCS900 Measure-ups using SPS930 UTS
Using the “PCS900 Entries” from the excel spreadsheet, key-in the computed values for both the Left and Right sides Include the Masts Leans and Trailing edge to tow point cylinder values PLEASE NOTE IV: When using “Center of UTS target”, YOU MUST set the “Height of the starting block” = for both the LEFT and RIGHT sides!!! The mast height dimensions are being calculated to the screed tips (top of the starting blocks) and not to the ground
24

25
Trimble PCS900 Measure-ups using SPS930 UTS
When all the mast measurements are keyed-in, go to “Machine Body” Machine Dimensions menu Key-in the “tow arm width” and the “Trailing edge to tow point cylinder” dimensions Go to Installation > Calibrate Sensors Calibrate both the Left and Right side AS450’s using the Mast Lean values (back/forward; in/out)
26
Trimble PCS900 Measure-ups using SPS930 UTS
PCS900 only saves one “persist” machine file which includes all the dimensions, etc… and “Text Items” Prior to saving the persist file, set the Text Items
27
Trimble PCS900 Measure-ups using SPS930 UTS
Sample PCS900 Test Items
28
Trimble PCS900 Measure-ups using SPS930 UTS
Go to “Save Settings” and include the screed width and date
29
Trimble PCS900 Measure-ups using SPS930 UTS
If the paving contractor will be paving variable widths with a rear mounted screed Raise the screed and set the width Proceed in setting up the machine/screed prior to measure-up and repeat the measure-up process Save the Machine with the new width and include the date Please Note V: You do not need to re-impute the Text Items
