Why So Few Women Leaders?
History Institutionalism Culture Learned “Inadequacy” 3. We know about historical barriers—the whole social norm that says: men earn the money and women tend the home and raise the children. We know that is still true in some parts of the world. We know that, for many women, they tend the home, raise the children AND work full time outside of the home. However…let’s look at that more closely. (Share personal experience or observation.) Is it true for you? Is true for most of the women you know? What about the impact on children of equal partnership between parents? How about institutionalism—the “good old boys” network? What about the “successful women’s” network in Zonta? (Ask for examples) Then we have culture—the culture where women don’t help other women but view them as a “Threat.” And--most cruel of all—what we do to ourselves by saying—or at least believing --“I’m not good enough. Someone else could do it better.” How many of you have heard that when you are looking for officers in your club? How many of you have thought that about yourself when a leadership opportunity arose?
