1 Narrative Unit Final Performance Task
All parts due October 7

2 Expectations and Purpose
The student will write a short narrative. The story will be fictitious and original. Students will be asked to complete multiple steps in the creation process before turning in the final typed paper. Completion of this task will demonstrate that the student can apply the lessons and standards learned in the narrative unit.

3 Step 1: Planning and Prewriting
Characters Setting Step 1: Planning and Prewriting Comedy or Tragedy? Adventure Or Romance? Type of Conflict?

4 What kind of story is it going to be?
Before you can do anything else you MUST decide on a basic genre for your story. Animal Adventure Fantasy Tragedy Or maybe something else? Romance Horror Comedy Super Heroes Fairy Tale Western Adventure Sea-Faring Mystery Sci-Fi

5 Setting: Now that you have chosen a type of story, you must decide on the setting: where and when the story will take place. Will it be in the past, present, or future? Winter, Summer, Spring, or Fall? Will it be in a real place, made up place, city, farm, or outer space?

6 Characters: Now that you have decided where and when, you need to choose the who! Protagonist: The Leading Role Antagonist: The One Who Causes Problems Supporting Characters: The Characters who fill in the other roles – family, friends, side-kicks…

7 Conflict: Okay – You’ve got your characters – Now you need to decide how they will interact with one another. What kind of main conflict will we have? Will there be other smaller conflicts – internal conflict, minor conflict…? Why will this conflict occur? How and when will this conflict be resolved?

8 Plot it out: Now let’s take all of this information and put it together into a plot diagram (Freytag pyramid). This will be a skeleton version of your story.

9 Step One of Student Packet:
We have now completed Step One – Planning and Prewriting. When you have finished filling in all of the Step One portion of your student packet, meet with Ms. Hill at the back the table at the back of the room. You cannot move on to Step Two until you have had Step One approved!

10 Step 2: Objective Version
Characters Setting Step 2: Objective Version Comedy or Tragedy? Adventure Or Romance? Type of Conflict?
