Do now: What is paraphrasing? When and why do we have to paraphrase?

2 Strategy 1: Replace some key words with synonyms (write the synonyms for the underlined words or phrases). “My own investigations have revealed animals in visible 1)distress lying unprotected from the full glare of the hot summer sun; 2)primates in 3)barren cages with no opportunity to climb; …” 1.distress: unhappy 2. primates: prisoners 3. barren: almost empty

3 After the replacement of some key vocabulary, use your own words to explain this example
“My own investigations have revealed animals in visible 1)distress lying unprotected from the full glare of the hot summer sun; 2)primates in 3)barren cages with no opportunity to climb; …” This evidence means the author’s own observations revealed that zoo animals are unhappy and unprotected from the hot sun in the summer. In addition, they are like prisoners living in almost empty cells with nothing to help them to climb…

4 Strategy 2: Change the sentence structure to express the same idea.
Grades 9–12: ECR Prompt One strategy is not enough because the sentence structure is still very similar, so…. Strategy 2: Change the sentence structure to express the same idea.  This evidence means zoo animals are unhappy and unprotected from the hot sun in the summer. In addition, they are like prisoners living in almost empty cells with nothing to help them to climb… This is the author’s own observations.
