Geography Vocabulary Geography – the study of earth’s surface, atmosphere and people Latitude – measure distance North and South of the Equator Also known as parallels Longitude – measure distance East and West of the Prime Meridian Also known as meridians Equator – 0 degrees latitude, separates the Northern and Southern hemispheres Prime Meridian – 0 degrees longitude, separates the Eastern and Western hemispheres Title – indicates the purpose of the map Scale – tells distances on a map Key - show the meaning of symbols on a map Also known as a legend
5
Vocabulary cont. – pg. 2 Directional indicator – determines direction on the map. Ex. Compass Rose (North, East, South, West) Inset Map – a smaller map located on a larger map for the purpose of showing details that cannot be seen on a larger map Physical Map- indicates landforms such as deserts, mountains, and plains Political Map – indicates governmental boundaries of countries, states and counties. Continent – one of the largest 7 land bodies on the earth Ocean – one of the four largest bodies of water on the earth Country - an specific area that has defined boundaries and is controlled by a single government

Geography First used by Greeks
“geo” – Earth “graphia” – to describe The study of Earth’s surface, atmosphere and people
7
Can you identify all of the continents?
Clue: There are 7 Can you identify all of the continents?
8
Can you identify all of the oceans?
Clue: There are 4 Can you identify all of the oceans?
9
Were you right??
10
Organizing the Globe: What is a Grid? A pattern of lines on the globe, which is made up of lines of latitude and longitude.
11
Latitude
12
Latitude Also called parallels
Measure distance north/south of the Equator
13
Longitude
14
Longitude Also called meridians
Measure distance east/west of Prime Meridian Prime Meridian runs through Greenwich, England.
15
Equator – imaginary line that runs around the earth between the North and South Poles; zero degrees latitude Prime Meridian – line running from the North Pole to the South Pole through Greenwich, England; zero degrees longitude
16
Organizing Our Globe: Hemispheres Continents
- North, South, East, & West Continents - Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, & South America Oceans - Atlantic, Arctic, Indian, & Pacific
17
Identify the Hemisphere!!!
18
4 Elements of a Map 1. Title - 2. Scale - 3. Key/Legend -
4. Directional Indicator - Often offers a description of the map Shows distance on the map Explains the symbols Determines the directions on the map; also called a compass rose
19
Directional Indicators
Allows us to identify direction Most common is the compass rose
20
What is wrong with this map???
21
Answer: Nothing!!! The directional indicator simply must mention that the top part of the map is SOUTH
22
Physical Map Indicate landforms
23
Political Map Indicate boundaries
24
Speculate this Map’s Purpose:
25
What is this Map’s Purpose?
26
How about this?
27
Inset Maps A small map on the same sheet of paper as a larger map that provides additional information that cannot be shown conveniently on the larger map.
28
Absolute Location The exact location of something on the earth’s surface expressed by a coordinate system such as latitude and longitude. Example Florence, SC is located at 33 degrees north latitude and 80 degrees west longitude!!!
29
Relative Location A location of a place in relation to another place
Example Mexico is located south of the United States.
