Odysseus, A Hero Among Men The Odyssey is a long epic poem about a brave hero who embarks on a journey home after winning the Trojan War. There are many books written by Homer around the 8th century B.C., The Wanderings of Odysseus is translated by Robert Fitzgerald. Throughout these stories the main hero, Odysseus, has to overcome many conflicts that slows his journey down, when all he wants is to get home to his family in Ithaca. An epic hero is “a larger then life figure, usually male, who embodies the ideals of a nation or race” (890). Odysseus is an epic hero because he is brave, clever, and loyal; however Odysseus is also human and therefore has one major weakness, curiosity.

10 Odysseus Characterization Student sample
In the epic poem Wandering of Odysseus from the Odyssey, by Homer and translated by Robert Fitzerald, the poet invokes or calls upon the Muse---the goddess of poetry---to give him inspiration in telling the story of Odysseus. According to McDougal Littell the definition of epic hero is “a larger-then-life-figure, usually male, which embodies the ideals of a nation or race. They take place in long, dangerous adventures and accomplish great deeds that require courage and superhuman strength” (890). Odysseus is a hero because he is brave, clever, and strong. However Odysseus is also human and therefore, has one major weakness: indestructibility. When it comes to war, Odysseus is a man with much guile and has know formidable. Odysseus shows much bravery and in the story he says, “Old shipmates, friends, the rest of you stand by; I’ll make the crossing in my won ship, with my own company, and found out what the mainland natives are---for they may be wild savages, and lawless, or hospitable and god-rearing men” (898). When Odysseus is in the cave with his men he shows much cleverness by telling the Cyclopes that his name was nobody, so when he would yell his name he would say something like, go get nobody. “A prodigious man slept in this cave alone, and took his flocks to graze a field---remote from all companions, knowing none but savage ways, a brute so huge, seems no man at all of those who eat good wheaten bread; but he seemed rather a shaggy mountain reared in solitude” (899). Also when they are trying to get out of the cave after they have stabbed the Cyclopes in the eye they cover themselves in ram wool, they were not overt, but all the men except for one made it out safely. Odysseus shows he is strong because he knew he had despotism to his men and even if he had to obliterate a whole civic he would just do it. “I brought along, and victuals in a bag, for in my bones I knew some towering brute would be upon us soon all outward power a wild man, ignorant of civility”(900). Although Odysseus is ruler of Troy he lacks indestructibility. Know human is indestructible even when there are gods to protect them from harm. Odysseus faces many dangerous activities with in his adventures at sea and finds himself in many tangles, but untangles them easily. Odysseus speaks “We cried aloud, lifting our hands to Zeus, powerless, looking at this, appalled; but Cyclops went on filling up his belly with man flesh and great gulps of whey then lay down like a mast among his sheep” (903). He also says “I had torched the spot when sudden fear stayed me: if I killed him we perished there was well, for we could never move his ponderous doorway slab aside” (903). No one is indestructible, but with the cleverness of Odysseus it sure seems like he will always be a weathered person. Odysseus is a hero because he is brave, clever, and strong. However Odysseus is also human and therefore, has one major weakness: indestructibility. Although he is the ruler and has much talent in what he does he can not be indestructible. This proves he is only human. Discuss what is working and where the problems are in this sample.
