2 China under the Ming Dynasty
: China had become the dominant power in Asia under the Ming Hongwu became first emperor Used respected traditions and institutions to bring stability to China Encouraged Confucian Moral standards Improved administration (Civil Service Tests) China’s trade policy in 1500’s: Isolation To keep influence of outsiders minimal, only government could conduct foreign trade Demand for Chinese goods (Silk & Ceramics) rippled economy Manufacturing and commerce increased China didn’t become industrialized 2

3 Manchus found the Qing Dynasty
1600, Ming was weakened by ineffective rulers 1644, Manchus invaded and ruled China Called rule the Qing Dynasty Manchus upheld traditional Confucian beliefs & social structures Made country’s frontiers safe & restored China’s prosperity First Emperor (Kangxi) reduced governments expenses & lowered taxes If foreign states wanted to trade with China, they needed to follow Chinese rules Traded only at special ports & paying tribute 3

1600’s & 1700’s: General peace and prosperity in China During Qing, irrigation & fertilizer use increased News crops (corn, potatoes) grew Food production increased Expanding families favored sons over daughters Only son was allowed to perform vital religious rituals Females were not valued & many female infants were killed Women had significant responsibilities Supervised children’s education and managed families finances 4
