2 Diction Word Choice

3 Connotation The feeling that a word evokes Positive Negative neutral

4 Denotation The dictionary definition

5 Mood How YOU feel about the text

6 Tone How the AUTHOR feels about the text

7 Rhyme The repetition of identical concluding syllables in different words, most often at the end of lines Ex. They put me in the oven to bake. Me a deprived and miserable cake. Feeling the heat I started to bubble. Watching the others I knew I was in trouble...

8 Rhythm Pattern of stresses within a line of verse
Stressed syllables- long soundng Unstressed syllables- short sounding

9 Alliteration The repetition of identical consonant sounds, most often the sounds at the beginning of words Three grey geese in a green field grazing, Grey were the geese and green was the grazing.

10 Onomatopoeia Words that imitate a sound or action Ex. Pop, buzz, slurp

11 Repetition The repeating of a phrase or line in poetry
Because I do not hope to turn again Because I do not hope Because I do not hope to turn…

12 Simile A direct comparison between two dissimilar things; uses “like” or “as” “Friends are like chocolate cake You can never have too many. Chocolate cake is like heaven – Always amazing you with each taste or feeling.”

13 Metaphor A comparison between two unlike things, describes one thing as if it were something else. Does NOT use “like’ or “as” Ex. If I were a Rose painted black, would you cast me aside like blackened, burnt rice? Would my color tarnish my sweet smell?

14 Hyperbole An exaggeration for effect Ex. Your suitcase weighs a ton!
“I had to wait in the station for ten days-an eternity.”

15 Personification Giving human characteristics to nonhumans
Ex. Hey, diddle, diddle, The cat and the fiddle, The cow jumped over the moon; The little dog laughed To see such sport, And the dish ran away with the spoon.

16 Symbolism The use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense. Ex. A light exists in Spring Not present on the year At any other period— When March is scarcely here

17 Imagery The sight, sounds, tastes, feelings, and smells that that the author makes the reader experience with their writing

18 Free Verse Poetry that does not rhyme or have a regular meter
