2. What is a fraction?
A fraction represents a part of a whole or part of a set.
Example:
The pizza slice is one part of the whole pizza.

The top number is called the numerator. The bottom number is called the denominator.

The numerator tells how many parts of the whole or set you have.
The denominator tells how many parts the whole or set is divided into.

5. Example 4 1 2 The circle is divided into 4 equal parts, or fourths.
Each part is one-fourth of the whole circle - one part out of four parts in all.
Two parts out of four parts would be…
Two-fourths or one half 1 4 1 2

6. 1/2 Example The window is divided into 2 equal parts, or halves.
Each part is one half of the whole window - one part out of two parts in all.

7. Fractions Part of a whole Top number is the numerator
Numerator – tells how many parts of the whole you have
