Functional Skills
2
For this project you will have two tasks to complete…
3
Task 1 - Drawing You will have to plan and draw an accurate scale drawing of an athletic sports field. Task 2 - Logic Solve a logical problem to work out the nationality of some athletes. You will also have to work out their sport and what day of the week they competed
4
What do we have on a athletic sport field and what events do we have?
(Think of the Olympics). Task 1 - Drawing
5
The parts that you will have to include in your sports field are:
Javelin Area Running Track Long Jump Pit Triple Jump Pit Discus Area Task 1 - Drawing
6
What areas of maths, and what equipment will we need?
Task 1 - Drawing
7
To make it fit you will have to use a scale of
You will be given a help sheet like this that tells you the shape of each of the different areas and how big to draw them. To make it fit you will have to use a scale of 1 cm = 5 metres What does this mean? It’s not as easy as it sounds and you will have to think about some bits. Task 1 - Drawing
8
To save space, both throwing areas and both jumping areas must be placed inside the running track, but they are not allowed to overlap each other. I suggest that you draw the running track first. Then draw the other areas on separate paper and glue them in to place. Once you have drawn it all it needs to be all on one single A3 piece of paper. Do you want to see mine?... Task 1 - Drawing
9
I’m sure you can do much better! Maybe with some colour and stuff.
Timmy’s Sports Field Scale: 1 cm = 5 metres I’m sure you can do much better! Maybe with some colour and stuff. Task 1 - Drawing
10
Before we go any further I want to make sure you can use your equipment
correctly. Task 1 - Drawing
11
On the paper on your desk please draw a square with
each side length 20 cm Task 1 - Drawing
12
On the end of the square please draw a semi-circle.
Task 1 - Drawing
13
Measure an angle of 30° from this corner...
Task 1 - Drawing
14
And make this into an isosceles triangle.
Task 1 - Drawing
15
Now for Task 2 Task 1 - Drawing
16
For the second task you will have Logic problem sheet.
You will given this sheet: It has clues written here A logic grid here And a solution table here Using the clues you have to work out which athlete did which sport, what nationality they were, and which day they did it on. Task 2 - Logic
17
And you will really have to think about it.
Using the grid you can put ticks and cross in to help you solve the problem. You may have to use a clue more than once, and even go back and reuse clues. And you will really have to think about it. Task 2 - Logic
18
Here is the first one as an example...
Task 2 - Logic
19
The American athlete competed two days after Prof F, but the day before the athlete who did the Triple Jump. Dame D is French. Task 2 - Logic
20
Now its your turn. Here is a reminder of your tasks...
