7 Common Ground ? Hi. I’m Carie and I want you to recall ball pit video question, “What do we have in common?” Our group here has a common ground- we’re here because we’re all interested in best practices in online education. Each online class has a common goal and that is to learn the course content. They meet this common goal through the support of the instructor, organization of the course, and interactivity with the content and each other in order to build connections and retain the information.

8 Each class is a community…
Hi, I’m Janna. Each online class is a community. The community is established by the instructor.

9 Developed a welcome announcement for students that is all text?
Have you ever? Developed a welcome announcement for students that is all text? Included an image? Included video or audio? Janna: Raise your hand if you have developed a welcome announcement for students that is all text. Take a look around at the number of raised hands. Keep your hand raised if you have included an image in a welcome announcement, whether it is of you, the content, or something else that represents the course. Keep your hand raised if you have ever used a video or audio welcome. Now look around at the number of raised hands. Notice how many hands have dropped. Lower your hands.

10 Course Introduction: Setting the Tone
Carie: The introduction of a course sets the tone. It tells students so many things: who you are, how you intend to engage them, what they can expect from the course and what they can expect from you. The introduction establishes your presence and should serve to encourage the growth of a community. When you add multi-media to an introduction, students can “see” you, they can hear you, they can imagine who you are as their guide through the course content.

11 Tools for Engagement Click on an icon to visit that tool Carie:
That same community spirit can be maintained throughout your course and today we want to share how you can do that with some tools that can be used in discussions and blogs. Discussions are a give and take. They should promote social purpose. Forums offer students a place to exchange their understanding and perceptions of course content. Discussions are meant to stimulate engagement and foster a community that promotes cognitive learning. Tools that will assist in this engagement are ones that can highlight content in a short presentation, can inspire students with key words, or create a collage of information. They can also offer interactive activities and communicate to all learners. Click on an icon to visit that tool
