1 Climate and weather What is the weather in Tallahassee today? What is the climate in Tallahassee?

2 How do we describe weather and climate?
Weather is the daily conditions of the Earth’s atmosphere at a specific place and time. Weather is defined by temperature of the air, precipitation, air pressure, humidity, wind speed and direction, clouds formation. Climate is the weather condition trends that have been observed over along period of time at a specific place. Climate is the average weather in a specific place.

3 Greenhouse Effect and it importance for life n Earth

4 Latitude and Climate How does climate affect the type of organisms living in an area?

5 Heat Transport in the Biosphere
Air currents/ winds are created and they move heat through the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans Unequal heating of Earth’s surface powers/drives winds and ocean currents. Warm air/water moves upward Cold air/water sinks down How do these processes affect weather and climate in an area?

6 Compare and contrast weather and Climate

7 Community Interactions
Limiting factors – water, food, temperature, natural resources and predators. In your group discuss situations how the above limiting factors affect a population. Identify examples of each of these factors. Competition for limited resources in nature – winners and losers.

8 Competitive exclusion principle

9 Ecological succession
The series of predictable changes that occur in a community over time is called ecological succession – slow changes in the physical environment or natural disturbances (volcanic eruptions, wild fires) Ecological succession Primary succession Volcanic or bare rocks/ pioneer species Secondary succession Wildfires, human activities

10 Successions in terrestrial and marine ecosystems
Climax community – being restored as a result of predictable changes. Is that the case now? In your group discuss the success of a secondary succession when invasive species have been introduced in the ecosystem. Use some of the examples of your classmates’ presentations on how invasive species affect an ecosystem

11 Coral reefs - example of succession in marine ecosystems
