Crewing Numbers & Roles
What is the overall role of a safety boat crew when arriving at any incident? 1. Immediate rescue needed 2. There is no immediate danger to life, but the safety boat should stand by until the incident has been resolved. 3. There is no danger to life or safety and the safety boat can depart immediately to other incidents. The most common is number 2, but while standing off keep a good lookout for more serious incidents. There should always be at least 2no people crewing the rescue boat at all times, however teaching establishments may operate with only one crew, as each boat usually has an instructor on board, who could be taken out whilst afloat if necessary.
