1 Overview of roll out in other zones
Epidemic control for volunteers Overview of roll out in other zones Key findings of the 2011 ECV review

2 Roll out in the African region
Started via field testing of tool Rolled out in countries with outbreak/ epidemic response operations supported by DREF Possible due to simplicity of materials Ability of health workers to deliver training Regional workshops raised strong interest; seen as a preparedness tool Further cascade to community level constrained by lack of funding

3 Roll out in the Americas region
Introduced alongside other PHE tools Applied in preparedness and response contexts, influenced by integrated management of diseases with epidemic potential Regional approach employed Regional adaptation (Spanish) Framework and training module Trainers’ network to support NS

4 2011 ECV review – Overall findings
Excellent concept Simple, flexible, action-oriented tool Adaptable training modules/program Replicable at very low cost Clearly a tool to help volunteers, but definitely not a program In order to be more useful, some work needed Advocacy and promotion of the toolkit Further development, i.e. training plans, messages

5 2011 ECV review – Manual and toolkit (1)
Clear, simple to understand manual Considerable duplication in module 2 and 3 Volunteer roles unnecessarily repeated Emphasize prevention, health promotion roles of volunteers Use long-lasting materials for the toolkits (laminate?)

6 2011 ECV review – Manual and toolkit (2)
Local adaptation essential! Focus on most likely diseases that cause outbreaks/epidemics Meet local regulations/conform to standards defined by MOH, local official bodies Consider more relevant local messages Align drawings to local culture, context Translate into local/regional languages

7 2011 ECV review – Manual and toolkit (3)
Need to correct inaccuracies, inconsistencies Reinforce/link ‘action tools’, ‘community message tools’ with additional explanations, or reference to guidelines, i.e. CBHFA Prepare teaching plans to guide new, less experienced facilitators
