5 9th Grade – Activity 1.15 Review SMELL Graphic Organizer on p.77 (15 min.) In the same groups as yesterday, complete the chart on p.77. Fill in every section with appropriate ideas. Include at least one answer with textual evidence if needed per question in each of the SMELL boxes. Open your notebooks to where you take notes on the presentations. I will grade those while you are doing the writing prompt! Pass them forward.

6 9th Grade – Springboard p. 65 (40 min.)
Do Writing to Sources – write name, date, and period at the upper right! Write an 8 sentence paragraph . Begin with a thesis (claim) that identifies the claim made by Obama & states how (L/P/E?) he supports that claim. (see end of Paragraph 6) Explain what reasons and supporting evidence Obama uses and why. Explain how the concession (what the government is doing) and conclusion (both are in Paragraph 35) support the claim. Use direct quotes for supporting evidence: Obama said, “Make us proud” (Obama 74). Claim Direct Quote #1 Commentary about how Direct Quote #1 supports claim Direct Quote #2 Commentary about how Direct Quote #2 supports claim Concession/Conclusion (paragraph 35) Direct Quote Commentary about how Concession/Conclusion quote supports claim. Restate claim in different words

Flashback – Interruption or transition to a time before the current events in a narrative. 14. Denotation – precise meaning of a word (dictionary definition). 15. Strategize – to plan the actions one will take to complete a task. Inference – conclusion about ideas not directly stated. Transcript – written copy or record of a conversation between two or more people. Claim – thesis statement describing the position the writer is taking on an issue.
