Uncontrolled copy not subject to amendment Military Aircraft Systems Other Aircraft Weapons Lesson 5 505. Revision. Types of gun 507. Introduction. Even with the development of guided weapons, many combat aircraft still carry guns – either as a back-up weapon or as their primary armament for self-defence. Slide 1 Revision 1.01 1

3 Guns Roles: Air-to-air – for close-range combat
Strafing – attacking ground targets Dual-role – combines the two roles 508. Gun roles. Aircraft guns have three main roles: Air-to-air combat. Although missiles are the primary weapon in modern air-to-air combat, guns are still useful for very close-range combat where missiles would not be suitable. Strafing. Strafing from the air remains an effective means of attacking ground targets, particularly from slow-moving, stable platforms such as helicopters. Dual-role. Some weapons on fast-jet aircraft combine the two roles into a single weapon type.

4 Guns Minigun Rotary gun 509. Minigun.
The M134 Minigun is a 7.62mm air-cooled, percussion-fired, multi- barrelled rotary gun, which is mounted on the Chinook helicopter. The gun is electrically driven from the aircraft’s 115V AC supply and is mounted on either the port or starboard side of the aircraft in the escape hatch or the cabin door respectively. The gun is fired manually, using belt-fed ammunition at up to rounds per minute. Range 1 km System weight 39 kg Projectile 7.62mm rifle bullets Operation Electrically cycled, multi-barrel Rate of fire 4,000 rpm Target Ground Aircraft Chinook Minigun Rotary gun

6 Guns 510. M60. The M60D machine gun is a 7.62mm calibre gas operated machine gun that is mounted on the Chinook helicopter and can be fired from either side of the cabin, or from the aircraft’s rear ramp. The gun is attached to a mount fixed to the aircraft that permits it to swivel freely between mechanical stops, which prevent damage to the aircraft during firing. The gun is fired manually at up to 550 rounds per minute. 8 Guns GPMG Machine gun 511. GPMG.
The General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) is a 7.62mm belt-fed general purpose machine gun that can be used as a light weapon, vehicle-mounted or in a sustained fire (SF) role. Versions adapted for the air role are mounted in the doors of Merlin, Puma and Lynx helicopters and manually fired by the crew. 10 Guns Mauser 27mm cannon 512. Mauser 27mm.
The Mauser 27mm cannon is a single barrel, high performance, breech cylinder gun operated by an electrically fired gas-operated system at a selective rate of 1000 or 1700 rounds per minute. Targeting of the cannon is done through the aircraft’s head-up display by using either a prediction sight or, in the case of the F3, a radar designated sight. The cannon has a very high muzzle velocity and its high rate of fire, coupled with its ability to fire several different types of high-explosive shells, make it equally suitable for both interceptor type aircraft and ground-attack aircraft alike. Range km System weight 100 kg Projectile 30mm explosive shells Operation Gas-cycled revolver Rate of fire 1,000 or 1,700 rpm Target Dual-purpose Aircraft Typhoon and Tornado Mauser 27mm cannon

12 Guns Chain Gun 30mm cannon 513. 30mm Chain Gun.
The Hughes M230 Chain Gun is a 30 mm, single-barrel automatic cannon developed by Hughes and now manufactured by Alliant Techsystems. It is an electrically operated chain gun, a weapon that uses external electrical power (as opposed to recoil or expanding gas generated by the firing cartridge) to cycle the weapon between shots. The Chain Gun is mounted on the chin turret of the Apache helicopter. Range 4.5 km System weight 55 kg Projectile 30mm explosive shells Operation Electrically cycled Rate of fire 625 rpm Target Ground Aircraft Apache Chain Gun 30mm cannon

14 Anti-submarine Weapons
Types: Torpedoes – main weapon type used Depth charges – still useful in shallow water Anti-submarine weapons. Submarines are primarily countered by depth charges and by torpedoes. In most modern militaries torpedoes have largely replaced depth charges in most roles, however depth charges can still have advantages when attacking submarines in shallow water

15 Anti-submarine Weapons
Sting Ray. Sting Ray is a lightweight, air- and sea-launched, electrically- powered, homing torpedo used against either deep ocean or coastal water submarines. The Sting Ray is an autonomous weapon which, having received pre- launch search pattern information from the launch aircraft, uses active sonar and tactical software to search for, localise and attack its submarine target. Should the Sting Ray miss its target, it has the ability to turn and home in again for another attack. Range 11 km Launch weight 265 kg Speed 45+ knots (80+ km/h) Warhead 45 kg shaped charge Guidance Active sonar Aircraft Merlin HM1 and Lynx HMA8 (Royal Navy) Sting Ray Anti-submarine torpedo
