1 “Popular support for Hitler was the most important reason why he became Chancellor in 1933?” How far do you agree with this view? Explain your answer. A 10 mark question always requires a balanced, two sided answer and a conclusion which sums up how far you agree.

2 Popular support was the most important reason up to 1933.
At the time of the Great Depression the Nazis held huge rallies and Hitler toured Germany to explain how he would improve the plight for the unemployed and improve the economy. Hitler won over many sections of society with his mixed messages and appeals. Hitler had promised to revise the Treaty of Versailles and stop the reparations payments which crippled the economy Goebbels made a distinctive propaganda campaign to promote Hitler’s appeal

3 Other factors to explain why Hitler became Chancellor in 1933
Political intrigue was the most important reason why Hitler won Chancellorship: Papen and Schleicher could not decide on how to improve the economic plight and both wanted to become Chancellor. As the Nazis were the largest party the Elites wanted to use their power and control Hitler Weimar had been extremely unpopular given the “November criminals” signing the 1918 armistice and then the Treaty of Versailles. The Freikorps and then the Nazis had intimidated and subdued much of the opposition so there were few viable alternatives. Hindenburg saw Hitler as the last chance/hope for a strong Germany

4 Conclusion Hitler built up the largest party in Germany using a mixture of propaganda, mass rallies and appeal However there were other factors were either equally or less important in making Hitler Chancellor by These included his control of the Elites and Hindenburg; political intrigue and his suppression of opposition through intimidation.
