12. Reading, Writing, Language, Speaking and Listening Curriculum
This year we will continue to use the BENCHMARK ADVANCE for our reading, language and vocabulary development, and daily writing instruction.
There are 10 Units of study. Like last year, each student receives one consumable magazine for each unit.
There will be Unit tests, for most units which will include, reading, vocabulary, language, comprehension and writing.

18. Carrillo’s New Homework Policy
At Carrillo Elementary, the only daily, on-going responsibility given to the students outside school hours is to read. We expect students to read daily. Daily reading will improve students overall academics as reading is an integral part of all subject areas.
In addition to the nightly reading requirement, students may be asked to work on grade-level writing/math journals, classroom projects, or unfinished classwork. Students receiving additional instructional support may receive individualized learning activities for home. Make-up work is not considered homework.
We realize this is a shift from traditional homework practice. If you would like your child to have further practice at home we suggest using one of our individualized digital programs: Lexia, Dreambox, ad TenMarks.

Here’s my pitch… As a grade level, we are supplementing our curriculum with the previous as well as a field trip to the GIA (spring) and Gold Rush Living History presentation. We are asking for a $15.00 voluntary donation for these curricular supplements.

20. Accelerated Reader
Accelerated Reader will take the place of reading cards this year. The only homework required by the school is to read nightly.
Students will take quizzes, here on campus, to test their comprehension and earn points towards incentives.
Implementation will take place over the next few weeks.

22. BYOD
The use of computers and such devices are increasingly necessary in elementary school. Though 4th grade is in line for the next classroom Chromebook Carts, we currently have only 25 Chrome books to divide between six 4th grade teachers.
With that said, I would like to request your child bring a device if they have one available!

23. Volunteers needed!
I do not, regularly, use parent volunteers in our classroom. However… I wish for… a ROOM parent I wish for… an ART ATTACK parent There will be many opportunities, throughout the year, for volunteers.
