ISP – student research models utilizing the arts
traditional / scholarship ….the project requires standard research (archives, texts, catalogues in English) and visual arts or performance analyses; but relies heavily upon other methods (interviews etc.) art as social studies research tool (ABR) …. creative work as a primary mode of inquiry, combined with traditional qualitative methods to investigate contemporary social or historical issue. art on art …. creative work as a tool to investigate visual arts, performance, or literary history. art – straight up Creative work – artistic practice. Visual or performance art, creative writing or photography studio work in which the primary outcome is visual or written work prepared for exhibition or performance. Tradtional: e.g. interviews with artists or arts managers, or more analysis of original works of art/architecture; qualitative-sociology of art. Art as research tool: Photo essays -- a series of photos with accompanying essay that includes analysis of the issue or experience; as well as a written discussion of the creative process itself. Art on Art: example: An essay on the social role of Czech puppetry combined with creation of two puppets with master puppet maker.I’m thinking in terms of visual arts / architecture history – but culture more broadly conceived also plays into the game. Work with ethno-catering; study of vietnamese community; holocaust studies – interviews with survivors. All include interview – field work where interviews inform creative process in final example
