Variables

Independent variable The physical quantity deliberately changed during the experiment.

Dependent variable The aim of the experiment will indicate this
It’s the variable that relies on the independent variable – eg. Will alter because of the independent variable being changed.

Controlled variables Sometimes the changes in the dependent variable are not solely due to the change in the independent variable It is necessary to control these factors so they do not change the results. You must decide what these variables are and how they can be kept constant.

Practical We are going to dilute a solution of potassium permanganate to see what happens. Get 5 test tubes and a 10ml measuring cylinder Fill in handout table with data and apply it to your test tubes

Aim Write an aim for the experiment
What is the purpose of the investigation? Your aim can be a question, a prediction, or a hypothesis.

Variables What is the independent variable? How will you change this variable? What is the range of measurements for this variable? What is the dependent variable? How will you measure this variable?

Controlled variables Name two controlled variables – how will you keep these constant?

List the equipment needed

Method Write a method Make sure it is written so someone else could follow it
