1. Early Years Foundation Stage Information Evening

2. EYFS Curriculum
In the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum there are seven areas. All areas are connected to one another and are equally important. 1.Personal and Social Development 2.Communication and language 3.Physical Development 4. Literacy 5. Maths 6.Understanding the World 7. Expressive Art and Design.

3. How do we teach these different areas of learning?
Our planning of what we are going to teach starts with your child. Through careful observations we can identify what interests your child, how they like to learn and what their next steps of learning will be. The classroom is set up so resources are easily accessible so children can learn independently both inside and outside.

4. What does my child’s shool week look like?
We are very lucky and have specialist teachers that come to teach your children.
Monday Rupert PE Skills 30 minutes
Tuesday visit to nursery
Wednesday Avril teaches dance at her dance studio. We all walk down the steps and the session lasts for 45mins.
Wednesday Mrs Copping teaches the children French for 20 minutes
Thursday Mrs Strachan teaches music for 30 minutes
Friday visit to nursery

5. Phonics
Every day your child will take part in a phonics session. We teach phonics through the letters and sounds phonic programme and Jolly phonics. Each sound we teach has an action to accompany it. During our phonic sessions children will play sound games and will learn to read and write simple words. The phonic session lasts for 20 mins.

6. Reading
We are lucky this term and have reading volunteers that come in on a Wednesday morning and a Friday afternoon. All reading books should be in school every day and the yellow books should be signed when you hear your child read.
Your child should have a sound book, yellow contact book and later on in the term some High Frequency words.
Please try to hear your child read every day.
Library books are changed on a Thursday.

7. Writing Don’t panic they will all get there!!!
Writing is such a complex process, there is so much involved in the writing process. Children need to know what it is they want to write, who they are writing for, what letters and sounds they need They need to have sufficiently well developed motor control of their arm, wrist, hand and fingers to hold a pencil effectively, controlling its movement and forming letters. The list goes on!

8. Writing in Pine Class
Resources are available at all times and in all areas for children to mark make.
Teachers may scribe what the child wants to say.
Teachers writing every day, modelling the writing process.
Writing for a purpose, writing when playing games, creating stories to go with pictures or models, writing signs, writing letters.

9. Show and tell Every Wednesday afternoon for everyone.
Writing will only happen if children are given time to talk. Children need to have the skills to express their thoughts and ideas orally. Show and tell gives your child time to develop these skills. It also helps us at school to find out what knowledge your child has about the world around us and what interests your child.

10. Forest Activities
Every Tuesday morning for about an hour.

11. Maths
Daily maths activities in Pine class consist of singing number rhymes, counting, problem solving, games, stories and imaginative play.
Children will become comfortable with numbers and with ideas such as 'heavier than' or 'bigger’
Children will be aware of shapes and space.
Children will begin to recognise, form and use numbers to 20.
Children will recognise and begin to use coins.

12. How to help your child at home
Support them with their reading and sound knowledge every day.
Encourage lots of talk at home, involve your child in lots of conversation.
Read stories to your child as much as possible.
Count steps, cars etc when out and about, point out numbers in the environment.

13. A few things to remember
Children must bring a coat to school every day.
Fresh fruit or vegetables for morning snack please!
All children must swim on a Friday unless they have a medical note from the doctor.
