2 The Holocaust brings up many WHY
The Holocaust brings up many WHY?s Why didn’t they fight back, why didn’t anyone say anything. Is there anything in our lives that make us guilty of “looking the other way”?

3 Do Now Share Out – *all things come full circle*
Discuss Terrible Things questions Have one person read the following poem aloud. It was written by a victim of the Nazi concentration camps. How does it connect to Burke? To Terrible Things? “In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up.” --Pastor Martin Niemöller, 1945; Nazi victim

4 Groups: Then read silently: “The Hangman”
Then take turns, each person reading a stanza. In your groups, try to annotate each stanza – 5Ws; look for anything you think will be important: diction, literary devices, etc. Use DIDLS as you read the poem. Watch and follow: Diction (word choice) Imagery (descriptions/simile/metaphor) Details (facts) Language (style) Syntax (long/short/juxtaposition)

5 Exit Ticket: Journal Grade Mind your commas!
What is the common message of all of these quotes, stories, and poems from the past 2 days? Which did you find to be the most powerful or impactful in making that statement: “Terrible Things”, “Hangman”, Burke (“The only thing necessary for evil to succeed…), or Neimoller (“First they came for the Jews”)? Defend your position. Include opposition (Although some might say ____ has a stronger impact, ultimately ______ is more powerful).
